Les Bailey had been around the rock'n'roll scene most of his life. His many credits included
being part of Flight 56 back in the 70s, playing with Freddie Fingers Lee for many years and,
more recently, providing the backbone of rock'n'roll trio, the Ravens.
Les had acted as roadie on occasion when Drew was in Rocking Pneumonia back in the mid 70s. He'd
even depped on drums with Yakety Yak many, many years ago. Then, in 2000, he depped a couple of times
for Alan Stallworthy in the Alleycats, showing that he'd become the perfect rock'n'roll
drummer, solid on the backbeat with the minimum of frills.
Now Freddie has retired from playing, Les was recently able to play quite regularly with the
Alleycats and became firmly entrenched in the 'family circle'. His committments to the Ravens
made him decline the offer of a permanent position, however.
Unfortunately Les became quite ill in 2008 and had to give up drumming. Just before Christmas he was
taken into intensive care in Lewisham Hospital. Then the sad news came that he
had passed away on 21st Feb 2009. |
